Philosophy of Education

I am motivated to teach because I believe that education is where change begins. It feels to me like the best way that I can make a difference, by educating students to be curious problem solvers that can then go make a difference in the world. My goal as an educator is to give students the tools to ask questions that instigate change and to teach students that their actions will impact their own futures, the futures of other people, and the future of the planet. I want student learning to be relevant to their lives and for them to make connections between subjects that are often defined separately in their traditional classrooms. Incorporating student experience into teaching and learning lends to culturally responsive teaching.

As an educator, I work to harness students’ understanding of the world so that education is not a practice of domination, but a practice where they get to take learning into their own hands. My classroom will leave space for adventure and curiosity; moments to explore and ask questions. By creating space for adventure, I can encourage students to remember that learning is exciting and necessary in understanding the world and our place within it. I am motivated to create a positive impact that weaves into future generations as we work to compel students to treat each other and the world that they live in with compassion, grace, and humility.
